I love the first few verses of this chapter. "set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God's right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not things of earth." Wow - I don't very often think of heaven, but what I am seeing here is that we can't let ourselves get bogged down with the concerns of this earthly life but we need to always keep in mind that we are living this life for the future life we will have in heaven with our God. An author I use to read a lot of always said "we are training for reigning". Our life here is preparing us for our life in heaven. We are in training and as we grow and pass the tests that come our way, we are learning how to live in eternity. Look at verse 7 - "you used to do these things when your life was part of this world, but now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language." He doesn't say He will remove it from us but it takes our initiative to remove those things from our lives. He is just there to help us. "Get rid of it".
We have to replace it with something and that is found in verses 16 and 17. ".....sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts......giving thanks through Him to God the Father." Let your mouth and heart be filled with praise toward our God. It's hard to speak ugly things when we are praising God!!!
