Like a baby content in its mother's arms,
my soul is a baby content.
-Psalm 131:2b
Baby's to-do list:
- drink milk/eat food that is prepared for you
- use up diaper supply as quickly as it's refilled (before, if possible)
- lie still & coo -- or kick & fuss -- while body and feet are dressed
- sleep in baby-friendly, safety-approved bed or comforting arms of parent/grandparent
- play with toys always within reach
NOT on Baby's to-do list:
- chase grocery cart between aisles of food, then empty wallet in exchange for taking food home
- wonder if a different brand of diapers would be a better fit and stop these embarrassing leaks
- check if wardrobe will accommodate growing body and feet -- without making thighs look fat
- wonder if crib slats are too far apart ... or if Momma will want to cuddle
- research if toys are mentally challenging enough & won't require a repeat of 6th grade
Like a baby content in its mother's arms,
my soul is a baby content.
-Psalm 131:2b
That verse -- actually all 3 verses of Psalm 131 -- really spoke to me today -- and to my soul that oftentimes easily stirs up a flurry of to-do's, responsibilities, questions, concerns.
But when i read that verse, the image of my son practically falling asleep in my arms today (he hardly ever does that, but he musta known i'd read this verse today) ... that image burned so brightly through the flurries!
My son wasn't concerned about anything as he began to drift into naptime.
My daughter's only pre-nap concern was picking out a story.
Because they know that Daddy and Mommy will take care of everything else.
And because they are content with what's happening in the moment.
What a great reminder that nugget of Scripture is to me today that all i need to do, is do the thing God has put in front of me for this moment.
To rest in His arms. Under His wings.
Because i want to do what the first half of that verse says:
I've kept my feet on the ground,
I've cultivated a quiet heart.
So, "Goo-goo, gaa-gaa," my soul. I mean, "Be content!"
