Can you hardly wait to read 1 & 2 Chronicles when you pick up your bible? In all honesty, 1 & 2 Chronicles, along with the book of Numbers, are not my first choices to read!
The word “chronicles” means records, archives, history. The book of Chronicles is a record of our history, our roots, our heritage . . . our spiritual family tree!
We may see ourselves as insignificant in the scheme of things. But not in God’s eyes. He is deliberate in recording each of our names! We are not insignificant to Him!
The first 4 chapters of 1 Chronicles are basically lists of names . . . hard to pronounce names of people I don’t know! Therefore, my eyes tend to slide over them. But every now and then, I notice that God interrupts the list with a sentence or two about a specific individual. For example . . .
Nimrod . . . known across the earth as a heroic warrior (1 Chron. 1:10)
Peleg . . . his name means “division” – during his lifetime the people of the world were divided into different language groups and dispersed.” (1 Chron. 1:19)
Achan . . . “brought disaster on Israel by taking plunder that had been set apart for the Lord.” (2 Chron 7)
Jabez . . . “more distinguished than any of his brothers . . . prayed to God . . . bless me and extend my lands. Please be with me in all that I do and keep me from all trouble and pain!” (1 Chron 4:9-10)
Descendants of Judah’s son Shelah . . . “They were the potters who lived in Netaim and Gederah. They all worked for the king.” (1 Chron 4:23)
Although we may not know many of the names, God knows AND He remembers! Each had their place in God’s plan! You and I have a place in God’s plan!
God knows you and me by name and writes our name on His family tree . . . the Book of Life!
It doesn’t really matter if people know or remember us . . . God does!
